This paper will look at the character of Andrew, and how he is reflective of the Jedi Knights from the Star Wars films. Andrew (and his Trio companions) often recite quotes from, and refer to, the Star Wars films. The quotes used are often those said by the ‘good’ characters rather than the villains, despite the Trio being ‘super-villains’. In this essay I will argue that like Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vadar), Andrew is lured to the ‘Dark Side’. While Anakin turns evil because he underestimates the power of the Dark Side, Andrew turns to the black magics and summoning demons in order to ‘belong’ in the world and acquire friends. I will argue that Andrew is more than a science fiction geek; he is craving what Luke Skywalker emulates – heroism, bravery and purposefulness. Luke Skywalker is also surrounded by a close circle of friends who admire and love him, which is something Andrew undoubtedly desires – this can be seen through his ‘love’ for Warren. I will look at Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With A Thousand Faces, which George Lucas used in his construction of Luke Skywalker and I will identify certain ideas that are reflected in the character of Andrew. I will explore Gregory J. Sakal’s ideas regarding redemption in his essay, ‘No Big Win: Themes of Sacrifice, Salvation, and Redemption’, and how his ideas relate to Andrew. I will also examine Anya’s death and suggest that in the final episode of BtVS, although Andrew was not heroic like Luke Skywalker, he got his wish for friends, as Anya sacrificed her life for him. |
